Gallery Locations
Currently I have no gallery representation. Since returning to the corporate world in 2012, I can no longer produce artwork as my full time occupation. I do however still accept commissioned works occasionally. These take on average 9-12 months to complete. I do keep a few finished pieces on hand for those looking for a special gift.
Speculative and Commission Work Availability...
A limited number of "one-of-a-kind" wood art forms are available for purchase starting at around $100 for mini-vessels and smaller sized pieces. Larger and highly-polished pieces become available as completed beginning at $450 and up depending on complexity and type of woods. These pieces have from 12 to 150 hours of work associated with them so they are not for everyone. These are heirloom art pieces made by hand and meant to be handed down for generations to come. Please contact Michael by email or telephone for inquiries on having a piece created for you or that special someone who would appreciate something hand-made instead of something store bought and produced in quantity by machines.
Michael's woodturning talents also include making custom replacement pieces (knobs, spindles, etc.) that is not available commercially, for antique wood furniture.
About Michael L. Jones
Working with wood for over 30 years, my artistic focus is heirloom quality hand-turned wooden vessels. Each piece of wood has in it a vessel that, in my mind, has been growing there since the tree was a seedling just waiting for me to uncover it's hidden beauty. Wood is my chosen media because it has a warmth that has captivated man for ages. Nature has embedded something that appeals to almost every sense within it. Commission pieces are a favorite of mine. From a piece of a tree that was special in someone's life, I can create a vessel for them that commemorates that tree's life in a form that will last for generations. Currently, I am exploring a series of turned wood sculpture as well. I use naturally felled or recycled North Carolina timbers that have spectacular figure or spalting. My preferred materials are Maple, Wild Cherry, and Sycamore for their beautiful character, sustainability and availability in this area.
I prefer the challenge of hollow vessels as they require an extreme level of skill and detail to create. Each piece is an original and the spirit of the tree reveals itself to me in each one-of-a-kind creation.
Each vessel is in process for about one year. There are multiple turning events to properly shape and dry these vessels slowly to avoid warpage and wood failure due to rapid drying. Once the final shaping and sanding has been completed, the finishing process can take almost two months to properly complete.
